TLDR: with Hetzner Cloud Provider, you can run Blockchain (witness/producer) nodes if the chain is based on DPOS (Delegated Proof of Stakes) or POS (Proof of Stakes). However, the PoW (Proof of Work) and Plotting is not allowed.

DPOS Blockchain example: Steem.
POS Blockchain example: Ethereum (previously was PoW)
POW Blockchain example: Bitcoin.
Plotting: is the first step of the farming process. It involves creating large (100GB+) files that can then be stored and farmed with very little energy use.

A few comments:

As far as I know, they have a policy against blockchain node operation and not apps. However, I still have a node there and a backup on contabo (this has been running for a bit over a month now).

I don’t see how PoS chains are an issue with VPS services as well TBH. Like, the resource utilization once a node is in sync with the head is very minimal. So, any other users on the same machine are also not disrupted cause of it.

If Heztner kicks all the blockchain nodes they will run out of customers. They barks, but I don’t think they will bite.

Have not faced any issue with Hetzner for more than 2 years now. Operating 2 nodes there.

I think what happened before with the Twitter thing is just a preemptive legal statement, similar to when an entity keeps things happening but reserves the right to take action if needed.

So I believe that as long as you are not doing any illegal activity that brings attention such as the thing that causes DMCA or copyright requests, you should be good.

I think it’s a warning towards PoW, rather. True, but if the issue someone can easily use the server for heavy virtualization and fry the server in the same way even if the project is not related to crypto. I know a few people in the BOINC community that are heavily using servers from Hetzner for projects such as Rosetta@home for example. TBH, Hetzner should tape in that market and offer servers that are 100 dedicated for PoW and mining in general.

Hetzner Cloud Provider provides VPS and also dedicated servers at a good price.
