VPS Virtualization: Why Should You Prefer KVM over OpenVZ?

View the Desktop Version

Both KVM and OpenVZ are mature technology and both have advantages and disadvantages.

OpenVZ

For OpenVZ, it is not a true virtualization. Rather, the virtualization is based on OS layer. But you get a higher CPU performance (thanks to lower memory and CPU overheads on the host server). The disadvantage is: OpenVZ VPS may be prone to oversell i.e. all VPS instances share the same resources and VPS companies may sell as many VPS instances as they like – all is possible. In case of overselling the VPS, all the instances will suffer from low performance and even not responding at all.

KVM

KVM is a true virtualization technology so it is less likely for overselling to occur (still possible though, but harder). The KVM virtualization also allows you to run docker and other software frameworks that rely on true kernel virtualization (custom kernelws). KVM is more reliable and stable than OpenVZ.

Prefer KVM

Most VPS are based on KVM. With Bandwagon, you can also choose OpenVZ. Bandwagon‘s OpenVZ VPS instances do not support IPv6 although they offer better CPU performance.
